On Monday, the Department of Health released the results of a clinical trial evaluating the safety and effectiveness of Nexium, the brand name for a heartburn medication that was approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on June 8, 2013. The study, led by Dr. Mark H. Roth, MD, of the University of Colorado, and Dr. David R. Littmann, MD, of the University of Washington, evaluated the drug’s safety and effectiveness for over 2,500 patients.
Patients had to be 18 and older, and the medication was available without prescription at an estimated retail cost of $12.85. The trial, which involved 8,500 patients, enrolled 2,8981 patients in whom the drug proved effective for a 14-day period. Patients were given the medication at a dose of 20 mg twice a day for 7 days, and a placebo pill for 10 days. A total of 8,890 patients were studied in the study. The study was designed to measure the drug’s efficacy in preventing acid reflux, which can lead to heartburn and other symptoms. The results of the study will be published in the December, 2013, issue of the American Journal of Gastroenterology.
Dr. H. Richard D. M. Schlesinger, MD, of the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado, and Dr. R. Richard A. Rochus, MD, of the Colorado Health Care Center, led the study. They evaluated the drug’s efficacy and safety in over 1,500 patients. The study was designed to provide a comprehensive look at its safety and effectiveness.
The results of the study showed a statistically significant improvement in the amount of acid in patients taking Nexium compared to the control group. When patients had a daily dose of 20 mg of the drug, the average improvement was 2.7 percent. The drug’s mean percent improvement in the percent of patients on the placebo pill was also significantly greater than the medication’s mean percent improvement in the percent of patients on the 20 mg dose. The medication’s mean percent improvement in the percent of patients on the 20 mg dose was 5.4 percent for Nexium and 4.3 percent for placebo.
In addition to the improvement in acid, patients were also reported to have better compliance. In this study, 80 percent of the patients in the Nexium group reported to follow up, and 80 percent of the patients in the placebo group reported to follow up.
Rochus, a professor of clinical medicine at the University of Washington and the University of Chicago, said, “This study is important because it suggests that the use of this medication may contribute to the development of gastric ulcers.”
Schlesinger said, “This is the first time that our study has been published on the safety and effectiveness of Nexium in patients who were taking a drug with a long history of gastrointestinal problems.”
The medication was initially approved by the FDA on June 8, 2013, and had been available for over two years at the same dose over three other drugs. As of July 10, 2013, the FDA approved it for Nexium for heartburn (acute reflux esophagitis) at an estimated retail cost of $12.85, or a 14-day treatment duration. The maximum daily dosage was 20 mg of the drug, and a daily maintenance dose of 20 mg was set at 25 mg twice a day. The drug was available without a prescription for over 2,890 patients, including patients who had been prescribed a higher dose of the medication for more than 12 weeks. The drug’s safety and effectiveness in over 2,000 patients has not been studied.
Rochus said, “The results of this study have provided us with a better understanding of the drug’s efficacy and safety in the majority of patients with heartburn.”
The results of the study have shown that the medication had a statistically significant improvement in acid reflux and a reduction in the amount of acid in patients taking Nexium compared to the control group. The study also has provided new information about the effectiveness of the drug in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and also found that patients taking the drug had an improved efficacy in reducing the amount of acid in their stomach when compared to those taking a placebo.

The medication is used to reduce symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in patients with a history of chronic heartburn, acid regurgitation, and heartburn, and persistent sour or bitter taste in mouth or occasional bitter taste in mouth.
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal upset, headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dizziness, and rash. In rare cases, patients may also experience persistent acid indigestion, muscle weakness, and seizures. If you notice any of these effects, tell your doctor promptly.
